This foster family movie takes you into life of a young boy as he grows into his new family.

Can a Superhero movie help foster kids settle in a new family and talk about their experiences? The DC hit Shazam, which is now streaming online, features the story of Billy Batson, a 14-year-old foster kid who initially doesn’t settle in well with his new family, especially his five other foster siblings. But when he gets supernatural powers, he discovers the power of working as a team… and the importance of family.

This Foster Family movie is inspiring to both young and old. We asked three kids – Tyler (12), Meghan (10), and Conor (8) what they thought of the movie and what they learned about foster families along the way.

Tyler

You don’t see foster families in movies all that much. Or if you do, there’s usually something bad going on, like the foster parents are mean. But in this movie, the foster parents were super cool and they were really loving. The house they lived in was cool too. What I liked was that the foster brothers and sisters all look out for each other. When Billy goes missing they track him down. It’s funny because Billy has the superpowers but he doesn’t really know how to use them. His foster brother who is a comics geek is the one who teaches him. I really liked that because it showed what foster siblings can do for each other.

Meghan

This movie was a bit scary at times but funny too. My favorite character was Darla. She is the little girl, the youngest in the foster family, but she is also the bravest of them all! In the movie, she is the one who sticks up for Billy when he’s acting like a bit of a jerk. I felt bad at first when Billy arrived at the foster family home because everyone was being so nice to him but he wasn’t nice to them. He had to get to know them. When he saw that his foster family supported him and wanted to help, he became part of the family. Then they all became heroes in the end. That bit was cool.

Conor

It was a cool movie. I usually like Marvel more than DC but this was fun. I thought it was sad when Billy got separated from his mother early on, but I was glad that he found nice foster parents who looked after him. The main bad guy in the movie had a family and they were mean to him and always fighting, but Billy, who was a foster kid, showed that you could grow up in a foster family and still be a good person.
