The New York Times has a thought-provoking article on our expectations around foster care.

How can we, as a country, advocate for the wellbeing of our foster children when there is a system in place that puts them last?

“If we want children out of the system and in flourishing homes, we have to look at a situation uniquely versus systematically,’’ Ms. Turner expressed after her application was rejected. 

Ms. Turner is a Williamsburg, Brooklyn resident with an extra room. She is a photographer, has a support system ready to help, travels sporadically for work — yet she was rejected.  To place over 400,000 children in thriving homes the volunteer pool has to be greatly expanded. To do this, we must take a closer look at the bureaucracy behind it all.
